Letters to the Editor...
Do we need them to be accountable?

How do you hold parents accountable? Can
we put them in jail if their kids fail or
disrupt the class? There's been a
political/societal fight over whether to
put parents in jail if a kid gets hold of
their improperly stored gun and commits a
crime with it.

Can we fine them? Your kid got an F in
science this quarter, that'll be $250 to
reimburse the state/school district for
wasting our time.

Can we make them pay for summer school or
the cost of repeating the grade? (I like
this one.) But imagine the CYA paper work
a teacher will have to keep to justify
failing a student when the parent has to
pay for it. Can we all withstand the
scrutiny?

Do we need parents to be accountable? It
would be better. Kids (people) do better
when the most important people in their
lives care and believe in what they're
doing. But is it essential to getting all
kids to at least pass? Is the reason my
8th graders read at a 3rd grade level
because the parents are not accountable? I
don't know.
