Lesson #2383. Primary and Secondary Color Mixing

Posted by Michele Owsley, Children's House Montessori Preschool, Nashville, TN
Science, level: All; Materials Required: 3 small clear containers, 3 eyedroppers, 3 very small clear bowls, 1 small pitcher, 1 sponge, 1 tray, Food coloring, water
Activity Time: 1 class; Concepts Taught: mixing colors

The following materials are needed:

  • 3 clear salt and pepper size containers (no lids) 3 eyedroppers, preferably with a red, yellow, and blue blub to squeeze at the top.
  • 3 very small clear bowls.
  • 1 small glass pitcher
  • 1 sponge
  • 1 tray with color coded dots below the small clear bowls.
  • Food coloring and water

*below each bowl will be the following information:

red star yellow star blue star
yellow star blue star red star

The children will take a drop of each of the colors indicated by the stars. The two primary colors will mix to make a secondary color. When completed the children will pour the water from the small bowls into a small pitcher and empty the pitcher into the sink. The child will then clean the bowls and pitcher with a small sponge. I use this lesson over and over again with my 3,4,and 5 year old mixed age preschool. They love it.
