Letters to the Editor...
parent accountability

As a second grade teacher, I'd like to have
more support from parents regarding their
children's behavior. There needs to be an
outright agreement between parents and
teachers about what constitutes acceptable
behavior in the classroom, and consistency
in consequences. My district requires that
parents, students, and teachers sign a
behavior contract at the beginning of the
school year, but many children and their
parents disregard it. It amazes me that
parents deny that their children could
misbehave, although as a parent, I know
that kids are usually worse for their own
parents, and if I'm seeing certain
behaviors at school, they must be seeing
them at home as well. Again, somehow we
have to reach a mutual understanding of
what is acceptable in order for learning to
take place. I'd love to be able to call
parents of some children to come pick them
up from school when the poor behavior
persists, but most parents would not agree
to it. I did have a parent last year who
insisted that I call him when his son acted
up, and the behavior improved somewhat
because of the dad's willingness to step in.
