Letters to the Editor...
Parent Accountability

We all know that for the majority of
children, a parent's support throughout
his/her school career is the single most
important ingredient for school success.

That said, teachers can make sure that they
extend a welcoming warmth and acceptance of
all parents. It is important to realize
that many times parents need our nurturing
and support more than the children. It is
up to us to find ways that will work for
each parent to participate to the best of
his/her ability. For some parents this
means they will cut things out at home for
you, make telephone calls, plan field
trips, make treats, etc., for others, this
will mean they are working side-by-side
with you in the classroom, providing an
extra pair of hands, eyes, ears whenever
possible.

It is our ultimate responsibility not to
judge a parent's interest in their child's
schooling by their participation level in
school activities....everyone has their
challenges and their good or bad times--who
are we to say we could do any better if
fate dealt us the same hand?

Lastly, the more a teacher extends warm,
welcoming support, the more she has created
a safe, supportive network of parents.
