Nutrition - Food Groups Pyramid Recipes

    Contributed by Teachers.Net Readers

    Pyramid Kabob

After studying the food pyramid, we do a pyramid kabob using one food from each group on a stick. We use cheese cubes, a piece of fruit, piece of a vegetable, small cube of ham, and a bread cube for the grains. We top it off with a mini marshmallow for the fats.
    -Lisa

    Pizzas on English Muffins

I've done pizzas on English muffins. You can also visit a farm or farmer's market to get veggies. We borrowed bread makers and made a salad and made a vegetable soup in a Visions pot (transparent so the kids can see how the heat makes the vegetables move). I just put my "fifth burner" on a counter where they could see it, but not easily touch it. I've been lucky to have parents who guard the cooking area. Add a rock and you can call it "Stone Soup."

    Ants on a Log

Ants on a log: celery sticks, filled with cream cheese or peanut butter, raisins dotted on top to look like ants. Or make tacos and that's every food group but the sweets.
    -Joan Maywalt

    Seed Balls

    Ingredients:

    • ½ cup peanut butter
    • ½ cup honey
    • ½ cup carob powder
    • ½ cup wheat germ, toasted
    • 1 cup chopped peanuts
    • ½ cup sunflower seeds

    Procedure:

Combine all the ingredients and roll into 1 inch balls. Chill until firm.

Be sure you have no students with peanut allergies.

    Fruit Leather

    Ingredients:

    • applesauce or pureed peaches, bananas, apricots, or a combination of these

    Procedure:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour sauced fruit into a greased shallow pan. Spread to 1/8" thickness. Place in oven and lower the temperature to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook for about 3 hours. Peel leather from the pan and cut with scissors.
