Learning to Look: Visual Resources & Multicultural Teaching

The City College Center for Worker Education, Brooklyn College Graduate Center for Worker Education, and the American Social History Project will host Learning to Look: Visual Resources & Multicultural Teaching, a faculty development program which aims to integrate visual resources from the World Wide Web into diverse social science and humanities classrooms.

Learning to Look: Visual Resources and Multicultural Teaching is part of a network of new media and pedagogy centers located across the country. This Institute will explore virtual and real resources available to urban educators. Major themes address the diversity of learners and institutional environments, including urban studies, African-American history, Holocaust studies, the study of workers and labor, including discussions of how digital media and the City itself have been incorporated into teaching these themes in various educational settings.

Participants will discuss new scholarship, examine new media resources, and develop strategies for classroom implementation. The Institute will feature workshops, forums, and special site visits incorporating the latest visual evidence into teaching. Participants will be provided hands-on experience with the latest technologic tools and web resources to enrich and reshape classroom practice.

Site visits will include: The New-York Historical Society, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, The Museum of Jewish Heritage, and the American Social History Project at the Graduate Center, CUNY.
