LESSON TITLE: MAKING A FAMILY TREE

SUBJECT AREA: Business GRADE LEVEL: 9-11

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

By the end of this lesson, the students will generate a family tree using data base and by using web sites.

COMPUTER FUNCTIONS

· Database will be used to organize a family tree skeleton
· Clip art may be used if necessary
· Following web sites will be used as a resource
www.ancestry.com
www.genealogy.com
www.familytreemaker.com

SPECIFY PROBLEM

What does your family tree include?

DATA MANIPULATION

· Students will use database to create a family tree
· Students will use clip art if necessary
· Students will research the above web sites for family information

RESULTS PRESENTATION

The final product will be a print out of student family tree creation

MULTIDIMENSIONAL ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITIES PRIOR TO COMPUTER
· Teacher introduces the problem and guides the class through the beginning
· Students are placed into small groups to discuss assignment
· Student groups decide how they will use computer functions to create their family tree
· Students will create a rough draft of their family siblings
· Students will use immediate family members as a resource to collect past family information

ACTIVITIES WHILE AT COMPUTER

Computer tasks are divided individually among each student
Each student has approximately 25 minutes to work on their tree
Search web sites for more family information
Create family tree using data base and clip art
Print out your final copy of family tree

AFTER USING COMPUTER

· Discuss the various computer functions that were used
· Facilitate a summary and review session with the whole class by discussing the different ways to use computer functions to create family picture. During the discussion, clarify any misconceptions that arise and reemphasize the key learning objective.

SUPPORTING ACTIVITIES

· Each student will present their family tree
· Write a one page essay on their ancestry

ASSESSMENT

Create a rubric for assessing the following:

· Database
Fields named appropriately
Printout contains appropriate information
Clip art, if used, is correct
· Report
Information is clear and easy to understand
Information is accurate
